My final piece is going to be focused around something I experienced while I was on Spring Break. I want the content of the piece to be focused around gun control, but also on the reality that the world is not a perfect place and therefore we need to be able to make smart responsible choices when we are out in the world. During Spring Break I visited San Juan, Puerto Rico with two of my close friends. This was the first time for all of us that we were able to really be on our own, far from home, and were entrusted to be smart, but enjoy our vacation. On one of our last nights, me and one of the other girls went out on the town and hung out with locals we had met throughout the week. While admiring the nighttime view of Puerto Rico from a historical landmark, we were all robbed at gunpoint. It was one of the single most terrifying moments of my life.

For the actual piece I want to incorporate photos from the place where we were robbed (the two below) as well as painting and mixed media. I have been working on the painting below for the last week or so once I knew my concept for this project. The painting is of the vibrant streets of old San Juan. I want the painting to appear smudged and partially washed away, but still keep the character of the city. The first photograph below was taken of me in the exact spot where we were forced to lay in the dirt during the robbery, but a few days before it happened. The last photograph is of the above ground cemetery that is a part of the grounds as well.

I struggle with this memory because one part of me is angered that their citizens had such easy access to guns that they are able to just walk around at night and point them at innocent tourists. And another part of me is upset with myself for being at that location in the first place, and not being a more intelligent tourist in a foreign country.

  1. Wow ... Great topic! I can see where this piece will have a lot of personal significance to you and am looking forward to seeing how you work your own emotions into the composition. Combining the vibrancy of the city and the horror of your experience should be a really interesting project.

  2. I think your topic and concept is going to work great because it is so personal. It's great that you have your own photographs for the project. I'm interested to see how you convey emotion through combining environments.

  4. I think you're going to be able to make this piece very passionate because of your experience. Hopefully it can be an outlet for that anger you've held onto both with them and with yourself. I'm very interested to see where this idea leads you.

  5. This idea sounds great. It will be interesting to see how you will bring the terror you felt into the piece when the picture of you looks very happy. I think it will be an interesting challenge.

  6. This a brilliant concept to work towards... combining beauty, vibrancy, and fun, with anger, terror, and dismay will be a beautiful thing to portray.... and as everyone has said, you have some really strong feelings about this (for obvious reasons), so the personal and terrifying qualities of this will be powerful. I'm sorry it happened. This could be a really interesting way to process through those thoughts and memories and will be quite a challenge. I look forward to seeing the progress.

  7. This is a great idea and it would be interesting if you somehow incorporated the idea of gun control in the US as that is a big topic right now. How this is something that happens in every country, even our own. I'm really sorry this happened to you and I'm hoping (and assuming) that you were/are all okay.

  10. Wow, wrong place, wrong time. So many woulda, coulda, shoulda's in life. Glad it turned out good for you. I like that you tackle deeply personal experiences in your life. You are passionate about your ideas, which are very solid. Looks like you have a pretty good start. if it will be very mixed media, you need to get a jump on it as soon as possible as this is a short turnaround time. of course something needs to relate to digital imaging, but going back into the work, transfers to other surfaces than paper, etc are all encouraged.
